Location: Lambeth, London
These improvements provided a new town square in the heart of Clapham by re-organising road space, plus a range of public realm improvements in the wider area to reconnect the Old Town with adjacent neighbourhoods, improve access to public transport, and make walking and cycling more appealing. Design measures included:
- Creating a new public plaza in Clapham Old Town
- Widening footways and narrowing carriageways in throughout the area
- New high quality footway surfacing
- Crossing points for pedestrians re-located and new crossings provided to connect to walking routes
- New side road entry treatments that encourage drivers to give way to pedestrians
- New cycle lanes to improve cycle access through the area
- More and better cycle parking
- Extensive tree planting
- New public seating
- Creative feature lighting
